Transparent video

Transparent video, processed on your device

Keep the subject and remove the scene around it. See the transparent areas on a checkerboard, then download a WebM for your next edit.

No green screen needed

AI finds the foreground in each frame. Start with a short clip and a clearly visible subject for the best result.

Transparent export

Download a VP9 WebM with an alpha channel for compositing over another background.

Private processing

Your video stays on your device throughout processing and export.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. Model inference and video encoding happen in your browser.

Is this video background remover free?

Yes. You can try background removal without signing up. Downloads count toward the same free-plan limits as the other Rotato tools.

How can I tell the background is transparent?

The result is shown over a checkerboard. Wherever you see the checks through the video, the background is transparent. The checks are only part of the preview and are not included in your download.

Is the original audio kept?

When your browser can decode the source audio, it is included in the WebM download as Opus audio.

Which browsers work?

Use a browser with WebGPU and VP9 encoding support, such as Chrome or Edge. Support also depends on your device.

Will this work on every subject?

BEN2 supports general foreground subjects, but quality varies with the scene. Fine transparent details and fast motion may produce artifacts. Try a short clip first.

Why WebM?

The output uses VP9 WebM to preserve transparency. Standard H.264 MP4 does not preserve an alpha channel.
